Take a look at the hints below for guidance.
Hint 1
Moira FitzHerrod is a lady’s maid serving Lady Brigid O’Neill, visiting from Ireland as shown on their ticket stubs. What is the purpose of Moira’s and Lady O’Neill’s visit?
Hint 2
The betting ledger also shows that Lady O’Neill has placed a substantial bet ahead of Warwick. Is there evidence of a deeper motive behind her visit beyond entertainment?
Hint 3
The bank statement from the Metropolitan Bank of Dublin proves Lady O’Neill is in dire financial straits and needs money, fast. Should her wager on Monaghan Boy pay off, she will have enough money to cover her debts. We can see in the muddy purple typewritten note that Lady O’Neill ordered Moira to act on her behalf and carry out some plan. How might the Lady or her Maid try to ensure her bet pays out?
Hint 4
Applegate’s statement describes an Irish woman approaching Brown and handing him a purple piece of paper, the contents of which upset Brown. Does this paper sound familiar?
Hint 5
The purple threat letter matches the description of the coloured paper, and also matches the muddy purple note, directly tying it to Lady O’Neill. The threatening letter implies Lady O’Neill was threatening Brown, thereby securing her wager. Did Brown place a phone call as instructed (31st July, 10:00pm, Mains 0203 & 0212)to signify he would agree to throw the race?
Hint 6
Brown never made the call, so Moira and Lady O’Neill would need to rig the race some other way. Can we place the two women at the time of the murder?
Hint 7
In Tommy’s letter, Tommy says an offhand comment about an Irishwoman reminded him to make a call at around 5:30pm on 1st August. The letter from the switchboard operator mentions a phone call to Lickey Tea Rooms from The Garrison exactly at this time. Where can we find the Main # for Lickey Tea Rooms?
Hint 8
The newspaper clipping features an ad on the back for Lickey Tea Rooms, mentioning Main 0211. Listening in to Tommy’s call (1st August, 5:30pm, Mains 0207 & 0211), he is trying to reach Lady O’Neill. A server at the tea rooms confirm both Irishwomen are present. Moira FitzHerrod and Lady O’Neill were busy taking tea when Brown was killed, cementing their alibis.
Hint 9
We may still need to find more information on how Moira intended to carry out the plan to rig the race. If you’ve covered all bases and you’re still stuck, please follow the hint section for The Final Hints to gradually reveal the answer to this case.
