Take a look at the hints below for guidance.
Hint 1
Beyond Brown’s killer, we also must determine who killed the horse Noble Standing. When and how did the horse die?
Hint 2
Charlie’s letter to Tommy offers some details. Noble Standing died at approximately 7:00am on 1st August, long before Brown was killed. The apparent murder weapon was a bladed flatcap like those used by the Peaky Blinders. Is there any evidence that contradicts this conclusion?
Hint 3
In the photograph of the flatcap we can see a tailor’s tag for “O’Connors Hatters of Ireland.” However, in a phone call between Arthur and Tommy (1st August, 2:00pm, Mains 0204 & 0207), they discuss buying a new flatcap from “H. Morrall Menswear”. The flatcap at the scene of Noble Standing’s murder must have been planted there by someone unfamiliar with the Peaky Blinder’s tailor. Does the flatcap point to any suspect looking to frame the Peaky Blinders?
Hint 4
Ignazio Riolo had been trying to frame the Peaky Blinders by bribing the other horse owners into fixing the race so Tommy Shelby’s horse, Monaghan Boy, would win. He also had a good reason to want the horse dead. He’d placed a large bet on Monaghan Boy, and his attempts to bribe Ferris Applegate into overweighting Noble Standing had failed according to the phone call between Applegate and Carraway. Is there any evidence of Riolo’s whereabouts on the morning of the 1st August?
Hint 5
The Highgate Hotel compliment slip says that a call came in for Riolo at 7:00am on the morning of the 1st August. The Concierge, H.C.Whitmore, says that he didn’t want to disturb Riolo in the breakfast room, and the caller asked Riolo to call back at 6:00pm that evening. If Riolo was in the hotel breakfast room at 7:00am, he couldn’t have been the one to kill the horse. Did anyone else have a reason to frame the Peaky Blinders?
Hint 6
Lots of people would like to frame the Peaky Blinders, but Moira FitzHerrod also has close ties to Dublin and was instructed to carry out some plan by Lady Brigid O’Neill. These instructions tell her to execute the plan before a rendezvous on the 1st, so the timeline aligns with the horse’s murder. Why would Moira want to murder Noble Standing?
Hint 7
Moira FitzHerrod’s employer, Lady Brigid O’Neill, was heavily in debt according to the bank statement and needed her bet on Monaghan Boy to pay out. Moira could have killed Noble Standing to eliminate Monaghan Boy’s biggest competitor. Framing the Peaky Blinders could be a favour to the IRA in line with orders O’Neill received on the back of her bank statement. Is there more reason to suspect Moira?
Hint 8
She visited The Garrison at around noon the day of the murder and asked Harry Fenton, as mentioned in his statement, about horseracing odds to help confirm if Noble Standing’s body had been discovered. However, Charlie Strong told Tommy Shelby in a letter that he would keep Noble Standing’s death a secret until the 2nd. Moira could only have known Noble Standing’s chances of winnings would suddenly change if she had killed the horse herself.
Answer
ANSWER: Moira killed Noble Standing and pushed the blame onto the Peaky Blinders by planting a flatcap at the scene. But we still need to find Clifford Brown’s killer…
