HINT 01

Who is Iain Lyle and what motive would he have for killing Randall? There are a couple of pieces of evidence that introduce Iain and a potential motive. First, familiarize yourself with Arthur Fennick’s Police interview.

HINT 02

Arthur Fennick was the editor at the New York Star & Globe where Randall Tomlinson worked. Arthur suggests that Iain Lyle at the London Evening Chronicle could want Randall dead for stealing his story ideas. Another piece of evidence supports Fennick’s claims and reinforces a motive for Iain. Please read Bert Greene’s Police interview.

HINT 03

Bert Greene has a similar view to Arthur Fennick, that Iain Lyle would want Randall dead. Furthermore, Bert Green states that “Iain said he’d get his own back in some form”. Iain also shows no signs of sympathy towards Randall’s death saying “it was good riddance Randall died”. We need to establish where Iain was at the time of the murder. Is there any other information that relates to Iain Lyle? Try looking at the London Evening Chronicle comps slip.

HINT 04

The comps slip is addressed to Lyle, granting him permission to travel to Warwick to interview a Melvin McAdams. There is no date mentioned on the comps slip. Can you find a time and date that Lyle travelled to Warwick? Read the Police Report from Officer Joe Jacobs.
(if you do not want to proceed with the answer to this just yet, then we advise you to work on the alibis for the other suspects before revealing your answer below)

Answer

Joe Jacobs is a Police Officer who works for the Warwick Police Constabulary. Officer Jacobs was called out to the property of Melvin McAdams on the 13th of December, 1965, at 5:50 am. He mentions a journalist from the London Evening Chronicle. This journalist was Iain Lyle. He was in Warwick around the time of the murder of Randall Tomlinson. Iain has a strong alibi.
