MOUNT MORTIMER HINTS: Harriet Hiller

Before starting the hints for each character, we would strongly recommend building a timeline of events as to when Dr. Achenbach was killed. If you get stuck trying to build the timeline of events, please follow the hints trail – “Timeline of Death”.

Who is Harriet Hiller? Firstly, familiarize yourself with the Station Staff list and pay attention to her role at the Scientific Research Station.

Harriet is the Helicopter Pilot based at the Science Research Station. What motive might she have for killing Dr. Achenbach? We need to find out a little more information about Harriet’s relationship with other fellow SRS workers. Turn your attention to one of the Diary entries that mentions Harriet on Wednesday, November 30^th.

The diary entry states: “Or Mick as Harriet calls him – I think there’s something going on between those two,” This suggests that Harriet and Mick (Michel) could potentially be in a relationship. There is another Diary entry that mentions Mick – Wednesday, November 30^th. Read this

The diary entry states: “Dr Fitz has said that Mick’s going to be alright, thank God.” We know that Harriet calls Michel, Mick. This Diary belongs to Harriet. Pay attention to references of Achenbach in her Diary entry. This might give us a motive.

On Nov 30 she states: “For now, all we can do is hope he comes to. That Achenbach will have hell to pay if he doesn’t”. Is this Harriet making a threat? What is the threat in relation to? If you haven’t done so already, we would suggest you learn more about Michel Besson and his role in the story. Now that we know Michel is in hospital due to Achenbach’s actions, Harriet’s motive becomes a lot clearer! We need to establish where she was at the time of the murder. Read her statement.

Harriet claims to have been in the Helicopter as she had taken Gary down to the hospital at Whitehorse. She claims to have left just before 8.30 pm and returned when Achenbach was dead. Open the email – Fwd: Emergency Ward Statement and read the statement from Dr Simon Samuels. 

Dr. Samuels confirms that a patient was brought into the hospital from Mt. Mortimer Research Station and that the helicopter arrived at around 9:20 pm. This confirms that Harriet was at the hospital at this time, but how can we be sure that she didn’t fly back to the Station in time and commit the murder? Read the email from Chief Winterburn – C-LPUS data.

The tech guys have been able to get the GPS data for a vehicle with the registration C-LPUS. What vehicle is this relating to? Take a look at the online webmail – Weather Cam – in particular the image showing the helicopter at 20:20.

C-LPUS is the helicopter at the SRS! If we look at the first entry of the GPS log and match the co-ordinates to the map in the employee handbook, it is the same time as the helicopter leaving in the webcam image at 20:20. Now we have the GPS location of the helicopter we are able to plot this on the maps provided in the employee handbook – use the handbook and the co-ordinates to locate the helicopter!

Harriet’s claim for when she left the SRS just before 8.30 pm was true. The GPS data backs up the witness statement given by Simon Samuels – Harriet arrived at the hospital at 9:20 pm. The helicopter then arrives back at the SRS at 10:25 pm, after Achenbach is found dead!
