Take a look at the hints below for guidance!
IMPORTANT!!!
Before starting the hints for each character, we would strongly recommend building a timeline of events as to when Dr. Achenbach was killed. If you get stuck trying to build the timeline of events, please follow the hints trail – “Timeline of Death”.
HINT 01
Who is John Kline? Firstly, familiarize yourself with the Station Staff list and pay attention to their role at the Scientific Research Station.
HINT 02
Dr. John Kline is a Zoologist based at the Scientific Research Station. What is John’s motive for wanting to kill Dr Achenbach? Read one of the diary entries on Friday, November 25th – “Today, something happened that I just had to write about!”
HINT 03
This diary entry suggests that Achenbach killed an endangered species of red-striped marten and that “John was pretty upset about it”. We should establish where John was at the time of the murder. Read his statement.
HINT 04
John claims to have been in the helicopter. Where was the helicopter and who else was operating it? If you haven’t already done so, we would advise you to concentrate on Harriet Hiller and solve the trail for Harriet before moving on. Do not move on to Hint 05 until you have done so.
HINT 05
Harriet does not mention in her statement that John was in the helicopter. How can we verify that John was with her? Open the email from Chief Winterburn – Fwd: Emergency Ward Statement, and read the statement from Simon Samuels.
HINT 06
Simon Samuels states “Dyer had been watched over on the helicopter journey by the Mt. Mortimer Staff Pilot and another staff member with red hair.” He then goes on to say, “The two Station people left and flew back up the mountain…” Who is this person with red hair? Take a look at John’s picture in the Active Staff List.
Answer
John has red hair! Simon Samuels verifies his claim that he was at the hospital. John is the only person at the SRS with red hair. After following the trail for Harriet Hiller, we know that the helicopter did not arrive back at the SRS until 22.25 i.e. after Achenbach had died.
