Hint 1

Who is Hermann and how did he end up at Cherwell Castle? Read Hermann’s memoir, referring to the page from Pop History Quarterly if you need help translating the Middle English text.

Hermann is a traveling friar who was headed west during the winter of 1380. He stopped at Cherwell Castle for a feast and agreed to stay for a while as the castle’s priest. Do we know what Hermann looked like? Study the tapestry photo.

The tapestry shows the feast Hermann attended, depicting a clergyman that must be Hermann. Next, is there any incident in which Hermann might have killed Graves, even by accident? Check the Cherwell Castle guidebook.

In the description of the chapel, the guidebook says Graves fought with a friar over a religious relic during a winter storm. Graves was shoved and took a severe blow to the head. Does this wound sound familiar?

Notes on the photo of Graves’ skeleton show Graves suffered a head wound. Can we date this fight between Hermann and Graves? Read the modern letter from St Carlaw Church.

The letter describes how Hermann arrived at St Carlaw bearing the relic he had fought Graves over. The friar apparently arrived in the summer of 1381, so Hermann must have fought Graves the previous winter. If Graves died during the winter of 1380 from the head wound, Hermann is the killer.
