Take a look at the hints below for guidance!

HINT 01

Matt Lane is the co-star of Craig Flint in Florida Squad. Matt plays the role of Michael Flannigan. Why would Matt choose to bring harm to Craig Flint?

HINT 02

The Entertainer Insider Monthly (June 1984) suggests that Matt Lane’s role in the Florida Squad is to be phased out. We should start to pin-point Matt’s whereabouts at the time of the murder. Was Matt seen with Craig in the run up to the murder?

HINT 03

Yes, according to the Concierge’s statement, Matt Lane visited Mr Flint’s apartment shortly before 8pm. Frederick Helm then saw Matt Lane leave shortly after 8pm, but where did he go? Can you identify Matt Lane in any pictures that might help us pin-point Matt’s whereabouts?

HINT 04

Matt Lane has a distinctive tattoo on his chest. This can be seen in The Entertainer Insider Monthly (June 1984), and Craig Flint mentions this in his interview with Glamorous Magazine – “…they have to apply all his makeup to his chest to hide this big stupid tattoo he’s got of a blue squid”. Can you identify Matt Lane in any other photograph?

HINT 05

Look at the negatives, you can see a man by an aeroplane that has a distinctive marking on his chest. This is Matt Lane. Why is this negative relevant?

HINT 06

Have you managed to gain the online access to the ILEDB? If not please follow the trail of gaining access to this database. There are hints available if you are stuck. See the hints for “Accessing the ILEDB”

HINT 07

The ILEDB requires the user to input specific codes to access extra evidence. If you are unsure how to navigate the ILEDB, please follow the hints called “ILEDB Files / Using the ILEDB”. Explore the ILEDB for more clues relating to Matt Lane.

HINT 08

The Internal Assignment mentions file name: UOF45/8. Access this file. It then asks you to ‘SEE FILE #PI27B/6. Access the file.

HINT 09

FILE #PI27B/6 mentions a suspicious plane (REG NO. N77297). This matches the same registration number of the plane that Matt Lane appears next to in the photo negatives. Can you build a time line around Matt Lane and the plane?

HINT 10

The name ‘Strauss’ is mentioned a lot throughout the ILEDB. Turn your attention to the Entertainment Insider Monthly (June 1984). Sam Reed has highlighted a useful suspect file worth investigating. Input this on the ILEDB and listen to the recordings.

HINT 11

Identify the caller on the 2nd recording. Could this be Matt Lane?

HINT 12

Yes!
In the first recorded call, the caller is heard saying: “last time OUR GUY went over to give him…hmm…or should I say…last time he went over to watch Kung-fu movies”. We know that Matt Lane often goes around to Craig’s house to watch Kung-fu movies because the day conceirge (Arthur Johnson) told us so in his statement. The call ends with Strauss telling the caller to “get OUR GUY to call me in a couple of weeks”. The second call comes in two weeks later.
In the second recorded call, the caller mentions ‘paparrazi’ and seems to know a lot about Craig Flint’s apartment. Note the time of the incoming call and what Matt is being told to do that evening. There is another piece of evidence that will help pin-point the whereabouts of Matt Lane that evening, around the time of the murder.

HINT 13

See The Miami Chronicle (Sunday, April 7, 1985), article – Major Smuggling Aircraft Seized. How can we ascertain that this is / is not Matt Lane?

HINT 14

Re-listen to the 2nd recording on the ILEDB file WT45/F2. Strauss instructs Matt Lane to use his pilot’s licence to go and collect 10 kilos from Nassau tonight. ‘Tonight’ being the night of April 5th, 1985. Does this match the timing of the news article? Now look at the street value of the narcotics mentioned in The Miami Chronicle (Sunday, April 7, 1985). Can you pin this on Matt Lane?

ANSWER

Yes! The bust by the NEA was worth approximately $1m. It had a street value of $100 per gram. You would need 10,000grams of narcotics to fetch a value of $1m. 10,000 grams = 10 kilos, the same amount mentioned by Strauss in the recording. The timings and locations in the instructions given to Matt Lane by Strauss match that of the news article. Matt Lane was the person arrested by the NEA and he therefore has an alibi at the time of Craig’s murder!
