HINT 02
Track Esther’s movements. Could she have accessed the saxophone that killed Stubby?
HINT 03
Does Esther have an alibi in any other piece of evidence to confirm her statement?
HINT 04
A bank statement closely matches everything Esther has mentioned in her statement (from getting the train from Exeter to going bowling with Eve, and seeing her friends in London the next day, so it’s clear that this bank statement belongs to Esther.)
Did she have enough time to poison the reed without getting caught?
Still totally stuck? Here’s the answer
ANSWER
Esther does stay at the house at the weekend where both saxophones were stored so one might think that she could have had plenty of opportunities to plant the reed, so we needed to trace her footsteps before we could come to a conclusion on Esther’s involvement.
Esther’s first arrival at the house is with Josh, and (according to her statement, and the Ding Dong doorbell analysis) she doesn’t venture anywhere near Stubby’s studio at this time because aside from dropping her bag in the hallway she is seen soon after on the doorbell analysis, and then they immediately head out for a meal. However, Esther does return home with Eve after Bowling on the night of the 13th, though her statement is unclear on what time this was…could this be the window of opportunity?
No. According to Eve, Esther had fallen asleep as soon as she’d gotten into the house. Sue said that Esther was slurring her words upon their return, and Esther’s bank statement shows multiple transactions at the Bowl Bar, which all adds up – Esther was drunk, but that wasn’t enough to prove her innocence.
The Ding Dong Analysis proves that the window of opportunity did not offer enough time for her to poison the reed – Sue and Ro turn up moments after Eve and Esther get back to the house! Other opportunities to have poisoned the reed (during the night and the next morning) wouldn’t have worked out – the old school bell on Stubby’s studio door would have alerted Stubby that someone had entered his studio uninvited. Esther’s Bank statement backs up her claims that she was in Greenwich for the rest of the weekend. The doorbell footage analysis shows that Esther did not return back to the house after leaving on the morning of the 14th.
